Situated in the south of France almost exactly half-way between the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, Toulouse is one of the fastest growing urban areas in Europe.  As a centre of aviation and aero-engineering, Toulouse attracts talented scientists and mechanics from all over the world; yet the city has much more to offer than a visit to the Airbus construction facility!  Originally an administrative centre during the days of the Roman Empire, Toulouse found it's feet during the Middle Ages and became a bustling metropolis that controlled the surrounding area.  Several architectural relics remain from this period, including the Basilique Saint Sernin, the Pont Neuf, the Capitole de Toulouse, the Toulouse Cathedral and the Bazacle.  The Canal du Midi flows through the city, as does the picturesque Garonne River.  Within easy driving distance of Toulouse is the beautiful walled city of Carcassonne, a few hours drive south-east on the A61 motorway.  North on the A62 (via the E09) is the red-brick town of Montauban, whilst the cathedral town of Albi lies approximately sixty kilometres north-east on the A68.
